There is no actual refrigeration in the tank to keep them cold, so they do melt down. Having said that, a full bin is a full and essentially closed off bin full of ice, so they ice is staying cold. As it melts (over hours) it tends to clump and freeze back together just a little - open the bin and 3 or 4 hits with the scoop and it's all back to normal chunks again. Note that when it melts, the water goes right back into the reservoir. The unit eventually detects (with optical sensor) that the ice bin is no longer completely full, and it starts making ice again. We leave ours on all the time, we always have ice, no problem.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. No, the ice will start to melt not too long after it is produced. However as it melts, it will continue to make ice until the bin is full, or it runs out of water. To continue making ice, just add more water.
