If light switch gets turned off unit will run until battery is depleted. So yes switch needs to stay on

I leave my switch on 24/7. As for the app. Unfortunately the app doesn't apply to this light. Which is very disappointing. I use the app for door bell and thermostats. You must use the Google home app to view history or turn light on if you want to use it at other times other than security. Hopefully this info helps.
