“Do I need to have a C wire? I currently have 4 wires - RC, G, Y and W - but no C. If it'll work without a C wire, do I lose any functionality? Thanks”

You will be okay without a c wire. I have two different system and both work the same (one with c wire and one without c wire). No loss in functionality.
