I think you need the Nest because they link and talk to each other. Alexa doesn't live in my household but Nest does work with Google Assistant.

No you cant just have it as a stand alone you must have the nest thermostat for it to work properly.

The Nest thermostat communicates through WiFi. The sensors, however, communicate directly with the thermostat. You need a Nest thermostat for it to work.

It will work with Alexa when you have the nest thermostat.
Using it as a stand alone sensor without a thermostat I'm not sure I don't think it would work. It connects to the nest thermostat during set up.

A Nest thermostat is still required. This item helps to read the temp better in a particular room. Yes this will work with Amazon alexa.
