It works with old units as well. Nest actually works on many more than some of it's competitors.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. The AC will not guide air into one room or the other. The way the thermostat works is that it reads the temperature in that room and blows cold air through all open vents to get the thermostat to read at the desired temperature. What this product does is it allows the reading to be in a different room based on time (if you choose to set a time for it). Basically what happens is if your living room (or room with main thermostat located in it) is at say 75 degrees and that's what the thermostat is set for, it'll shut down the unit. This will happen even if your bedroom is at 80 degrees. So having this product in your room will keep the AC on until the room reaches the desired temperature.

Keep in mind, Nest Temperature Sensor will only work with Nest thermostat 3rd Gen and Nest thermostat E. Everything about your system will work the same as before, except now, instead of taking the temperature reading from the thermostat, it takes the reading from the sensor. The sensor will tell your thermostat what temperature it is in the room it’s placed. Whenever the sensor is active, your thermostat will use your sensor's temperature reading to control when your system turns on and off. Your thermostat will ignore its own built-in temperature sensor when the sensor is set as the main sensor. If you don't have a zoned system, your Nest thermostat will turn on heating or cooling for the entire house to adjust the temperature it reads from the main temperature sensor.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. You pick which room the primary for the temp. Like I got halfway it where my thermostat and the sensor in my bedroom. I pick the bedroom for the temperature. Or I can change to hallway.
