For the carafe, a paper filter is necessary as it is not mesh. The smaller filter, for use with the single cup, is mesh, but we still use the tiny filters with that, too.

The paper basket filters are inexpensive and help make the coffee grounds disposal easier and cleaner than only a gold mesh filter. The machine comes with a plastic basket which holds the paper filter. I would not recommend just using this plastic basket. The k-cup / pre-packaged single cup pods come with an internal paper filter. If you use the single cup ground coffee holder, you may or not use a filter. They are equipped with a metal mesh filter in the holder. While small cone filters are available, I haven't seen them readily available. I use the 2-4 cup basket filters in the single sup holder. This is for both easier clean-up and it does filter some sediment. The coffee grounds and paper filters can be composted and will break down well.
