I believe it comes with a program called "Photos," which has basic editing functions, but if you need substantially more, yes, either check the store or exit S Mode to use non-MS programs. One correction I would like to make: "Donnie" says that you cannot return to S Mode if you leave it. This is a common misconception. You can, but it involves resetting the device to factory install condition, which, of course, means that you need to backup EVERYTHING before you do so.
