• It depends on where you use it. I use it sometimes on the arm of my microfiber chair but a smooth surface does need a mouse pad.

• My optical mouse does not need a mouse pad, works just fine on table or other surface that is smooth.

• You do not need a mouse pad unless you want to use one or are using the mouse on glass or reflective surfaces.
