• The wireless uses radio waves, not optical like a remote so it will work just fine under the desk.

• yes, it's a wireless signal. I have my work presentation laptop hidden in ceiling tiles and it works at about 30 feet away! In fact, I use 2 wireless mice for that system so I as an IT person can also control the PC if the executive has problems

• Yes I have the unit set up just like my old wireless and it works just fine. There is no optical contact yet I have no problems at all.

• Even if you sit them on the top of the tower. I would throw both on the garbage and buy a 9,99 wire keyboard and a 20,00 wireless mouse instead.
