How do I get the top open to replace the ink ? null

Open the scanner lid and tilt it back. Under the scanner glass is a section that also raises up and tilts back exposing the inner workings. Notice that on each side of the printer, there is are projections that serve to give a grip to assist in raising it. On my printer these are chromed and easy to spot. Once you are looking inside, it easy to see where the ink cartridges install.

If you lift up the scanner glass (there's a space on the right side to grasp it), you can then get to the ink cartridges.
