You need a phone line, but if you use voip services such as vonage which give you a voip phone line, you can simply plug your vonage phone line into your fax and send faxes that way. It dials up using your vonage or other voip phone line, so if you don't have a regular phone line having a voip provider is the next best thing if you have fast internet access.

Dear Suzie;

Yes, you need a land line. Using Charter's phone system doesn't work that well with faxes. A traditional phone line with this HP OfficeJet does the trick. Although faxes are in their decline over the past few years, I expect people to keep doing them for legal documents, tax returns, and insurance claims. With all that in mind, go get yourself this printer.
