“Just purchased this along with an external LG DVD/CD writer. I've successfully used an external hard drive in the USB 3.0 port on the right side of the laptop, but DVDs won't play in that port. They will play in the 3.0 port on the left side. Problem?”

That is very odd considering that they are the same type of USB port. If you continue to have issues, I would suggest reaching out to HP Support or Best Buy's Geek Squad.
