I had this installed yesterday by Best Buy on a 2017 VW Jetta with push button start. I tried to use the remote without my factory key FOB near by and it did not start. Do I need to carry both factory FOB and the remote starter FOB to drive my car? null

No but you do need it next to you still has to be by you your regular key

I carry my 2010 Lexus RX350 factory fob and the idat-astart HC3.5 fob with no problems using either one.

Yes, when you open the door of the vehicle the motor will shut off as a safety feature to avoid theft. You will then need to start the car with the factory fob.
