Can you set it to com1? null

I was able to assign com 1 with software

Open up device manager and look under ports. Then you can click properties. From there there is an advance button where you can change the port. But normally comb1 is the on board serial port. So you will have to change them both to get the USB serial cable to work.

Yes. The install defaulted it to COM4 but I was able to change it in Device Manager(WIN7) to COM1.
