BluRay players have a higher video output than say a DVD or VHS players and to minimize the loss of your picture the HDMI cable will maximize the images that you look at and also it carrries the audio all in one cable. This will clean up the back side of your receiver. You purchased the BluRay play I assume to get better picture without ising the better inter connect you kinda defeats the purpose of a BluRay playback machine. Hope this helps
