The enclosure doesn't have a drive in it. I you put a 3.5" SATA HD into the drive and connect it to a USB port you can use it to transfer data between compatible computers.

The biggest issue will be the type of connection the laptop drive uses as there are two that are the most comely used and which one you have depends on the age of the laptop. If it uses a wide plug then you need a device that supports eide interface or pata if its a small plug its sata which is easier to find enclosures for.
