Yes, it can be used to connect a USB printer. It can't be used between two machines to share the printer. You would need a USB Peripheral Sharing Switch in order to share a USB printer between two machines. These are not very expensive devices but I do not see any listed on the website. You may have to call the local store to see if they, or Geek Squad @ Best Buy, stock them.
