Water goes directly into the tank. However, you can attach a garden sized hose if you want the water to continuously drain in a sink or shower and bypass having to manually empty the unit.

The dehumidifier stops pulling the water out until the tank gets emptied. 50-Pint dehumidifier on the "Comfort" setting can run for a few days (of course it depends on the level of humidity in a room).
