“In the PDF manual it states that if the power is turned off you must wait for three to five minutes before plugging back in. What happens if there is an electrical surge or quick loss of power from the power company? Is the freezer going to malfunction?”

I had this happen and when the power was turned back on, the freezer came back on too. Perhaps if you flipped the breaker off & on immediately, it would take up to 3 minutes to reset, but that was not my experience.
