I assume you have this in a vertical rather than horizontal position given you mention side screws. The long screws secure the the tv mounting part of the bracket and hold the TV in place in the horizontal position (bottom). I would be concerned that in the vertical position the TV could slide off the wall mounting bracket. You would need to put some sort of additional stop in the top now side mounting position to prevent this condition.
