“I picked up new cable company equipment...little boxes with only hdmi output. Fine for my “newer” tv, but I have a great old rear projection tv(1080i) that I don’t necessarily want to replace this minute. Will this gizmo potentially do the trick?”

If you have the HDMI double-ended cable, and use this particular cable, and have the old connections that require the male end, then you will need this cable. Double-check all your needs before purchasing but it sounds like you will need this cable.
