I did this with my old Technics SA-GX130 and it works just fine. Your newer Onkyo should have no problem.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.I think you are on the right track. We just upgraded our TV and it didn't have a sound AV output, only optical. The adapter comes with AV cables, but not an optical cable, so you have to purchase that separately. And make sure you flip the switch on the side of the adapter from Coaxial to Optical. I almost returned mine thinking it was defective but busted out the directions and found the switch prior to returning.
