• You can, however it will yield underwhelming performance. The i9-9900k utilizes Z390 chipset motherboards. Your I7-8700 uses a Z370 motherboard.

• If it’s a z390 motherboard then you shouldn’t have any issues. If it’s a z370 board then you may have to update the bios to work with 9th gen cpus. Also I don’t think a z370 board can overclock a 9900k

• I would simply say, check your motherboard/chipset, it needs to support the 1151 socket. You can visit your motherboard manufacturer website also for that model and see what processors are compatible with it. You could call IBuyPower also and I bet a rep would review your purchase and let you know if it could be updated.
