Go by the speakers sensitivity rating and frequency response which are excellent with this speaker. 92 and up sensitivity will sound just fine without an amp when paired with atleast an average stock or after market headunit like a pioneer. They generally come equiped with an internal amp that can power this speaker at a very high level and give you an ample amt of bass. If you have a stock or smaller battery paired with a 70 amp altenator you have limits to long you can play your music loud before the altenator begins to lose its ability to power the rest of your acessories efficiently Amps are vital for subs and low senstivity/high rms speakers but not for a quality speaker such as this 6x9 jbl
