12 gauge is best but 16 works just fine. If money is no issue, go 12 gauge and don't look back.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.This really is a question about what type of receiver of amplifier you are using. A 900 Watt speaker will mean 7.5 A at 120 VAC. This depends on if the wire is copper or aluminum. If we assume copper, then #16 is good for around 18 amps. I already stated that 7.5 A should be our maximum, so #16 speaker wire. Some audiophiles say the bigger gauge of speaker wire the better quality of sound. From an engineers perspective, this is mostly a method of selling expensive cable.
