Yes, the 4GB RAM is expandable, but not without removing the 4GB stick already present (ie, there are no open slots). The answer to this question given by the Lenovo Product Expert (reproduced below for convenience) is *incorrect*. The truth is that there is nothing soldered onto the motherboard, and there is one slot containing a 4GB stick of ram. Please have a look at my review (DNADoc) where I've added two photos of the guts of this laptop. I have personally added a 16GB stick of DDR4, and it was recognized perfectly. Again, the answer below that was given by the Lenovo Product Expert is *not* correct. "Model number 81MV0001US is not user upgradable. A certified technician must do all of the work, so as to not void the warranty. There is 4GB of RAM soldered to the motherboard. Additionally there is one RAM memory slot that can support 8GB RAM stick, so your certified technician can add 8GB to make the system total 12GB."
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.I bought this exact model number based on the above answer. There is not 4 on the board and an open slot. There is 4 in the slot. I took out the four and put in a brand new 8 and only have 8. I am very disappointed and feel misled. This makes it a little difficult to get to 12. Maybe someone can answer how the motherboard will react if a 16 stick is put in. Will it just read the 12 or will the unit not boot up?
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.I did some research on this, so let me clarify this a bit for everyone with what I find: 1. There are TWO basic models of this laptop: 81MV0001US and 81NV0001US. 2. The former (81M) includes sub-models S145–14IWL and S145–15IWL, which have a double data rate 4 (DDR4) small outline dual in-line memory module (SODIMM) onboard slot that is empty plus a double data rate 4 (DDR4) onboard slot that is occupied. 3. The latter (81N) includes sub-models S145–14AST, S145–14IGM, S145–15AST, and S145–15IGM, with a double data rate 4 (DDR4) small outline dual in-line memory module (SODIMM) I suspect the 4GB module is soldered onto both, but only the 81M can have memory ADDED to it, but have not yet confirmed this.
