My opinion is that its there to promote a "premium" look and feel. It also adds about 0.05 lb. and probably a little rigidity to the screen. It does look nice but it caused me to buy an extra-protective speck FlapTop Sleeve (the one for Macbook Air 13) and the extended geek squad plan with accidental damage protection. I see no cooling benefit as there's no glass on the bottom half of the laptop where the heat is. Also, glass is not known to be particularly good at heat transfer.
