HE machines, whether LG, Samsung, etc. all seem to have the same issue. None of them like small loads. Period. I don't know if that's just a function of being an HE machine, but it really is an annoying issue. I have an 8-year old model (5.2 cu. ft. tub) that I'm about to replace with this model and I'm hoping that the smaller capacity will allow me to wash smaller loads. What I've been doing is saving up enough laundry to make a larger load so the machine functions properly (sort of). That is harder than you might think when you only have 2 adults in the house and it takes quite a while to save up enough clothes to make the machine function. To add insult to injury, mine must have been the only model or year that came without a 'Delicate' cycle, so that's even more fun - trying to figure out how to do a small load of delicates without a delicate cycle on an HE machine that throws up over small loads. Invariably, a smallish load will start dinging at me that it's either out of balance, and I have to go re-distribute that load over and over again, or worst yet, it goes into the UE mode and keeps filling up with water trying to re-distribute the load. This happens over and over again if you're not around to stop it. At some point, if I'm not aware it's happening, the UE function just stops and the machine shuts off. In the past, I've been able to go to a "Spin Only' cycle to finish up the load, but now my LG is shot for good. No matter what size the load, large or small, (any cycle, any temp) it simply won't get past the UE problem. After trying over and over and over again (re-balancing, re-starting), it just keeps throwing itself out of balance and shutting down. This might be able to be solved with a service call, but by the time I pay for that, I've probably paid for a third or more of the cost for a new one. I certainly hope they've gotten better at this UE and out of balance function. By the way, I've known how to load a washer for a very long time now. I know how to evenly distribute the load and to wash similar items together, so I can't tell you how annoying it is to have an evenly distributed load and then turn on the LG, only to watch it spin at high speed to the right, then left, then right, then left so that by the time the water starts, my evenly distributed load is now a big wad at the side of the tub. I have to hit pause, manually re-distribute the load and re-start the cycle. I have no earthly idea why LG thought this was a good idea. One of the reasons you get so many out of balance problems might be because of this totally useless feature. I absolutely hate it.
