“We hooked up this tv last night, and picture is fuzzy. Cable TV works, but HDMI is not working. Tried different ports, different cable, called cable company and they said tv is bad because box worked with another tv. Is this common?”

You might need to switch your box for the right output. It sounds like it's outputing in component video.
