• Opens fully side to side and partially down. When it opens down partially, it becomes like a laundry shoot - you can drop clothes in and they don't fall on the floor.

• Yes, it opens downward, not all the way, but enough to easily slide clothes in. It also opens from the side, and I'm told that the side opening is changeable from left to right if needed.
