• No, CD/DVD drive model GP65NB60 is a plug and play device. It reads/writes files from your discs and doesn't require any software to be installed to do that. ^Chris

• you will need software in order to play cd's and dvd's but you do not need to use the software bundled with this in order to do so. Chances are your computer already has software installed that is able to play cd's and dvd's
