It does the job! I was looking for a way to play my DVDs on my Windows 11 laptop and it is awesome. It isn't as modern-looking as other more expensive options; it's plastic/more retro-looking, like when DVDs were actually a popular thing which is kind of cool. It comes with a DVD that has media player software to download but it is insanely old and you have to pay to use it which was a hard pass so I just threw that away. I downloaded a free media player online instead called VLC which works perfectly with it to play both DVDs and CDs.

I needed a really simple easy to use DVD drive for my Intel NUC PC so I decided to try this LG USB drive. I just plugged it into an open USB slot, Windows 10 found the correct driver and it was ready to go in no time at all. I've used it for CD's and DVD's and it works great. Very compact and USB powered so no wall wart needed. I knocked off one star because it doesn't always seem to read at the highest speed specified by LG and it's only USB 2.0. But for the price that's understandable. Otherwise a good simple USB drive.

Bought because new laptop came without CD player. Have used it so far to load software from CD. Works well as I expected. Looks good, compact and priced well. Only negative is that it is a bit noisy. I knew that going in since numerous other reviews mentioned the noise. When you are just loading data, it really doesn't matter. I haven't played a movie or music, but I don't think it is loud enough to interfere.

I used this to convert my old CD’s to iTunes. It worked well for this purpose. It did take longer to download the music from the CD’s than I expected. On average it took 20-30 seconds per song. If I purchased a more expensive unit it probably would have cut the time in half, but the other drives I saw were twice the price. I think this drive was good for the value.

My wife and I each purchased new MacBook Pro laptops, neither of which have a built-in DVD/CD player. When we needed to play a DVD for a presentation we purchased the LG DVD/CD player to connect to the MacBook Pro and it worked flawlessly. The price was very reasonable and we now have a way to still use our laptops for DVDs and CDs. We had no trouble connecting the LG DVD/CD player to our MacBook Pros.

Works great and looks good. However wish it was a little bit quieter and that the software to use the drive/play DVDs didn't require an user registration.

I build and repair computers as a side job, and I had a customer that still required a DVD drive with his new laptop. This portable unit is light and supports the disc formats he needed. The unit only requires one USB connection.

I'm very pleased with my purchase of the LG - 8x External USB 2.0 Double-Layer DVD±RW/±R/-RAM/CD-RW Drive. I would certainly recommend this to anyone. Plus, you get free bonus software with your purchase - added bonus! I enjoy how quick everything runs on the external USB disc drive. The drive can have some noise, but for the most part it runs super smooth and does a great job. Personal note: I'd recommend getting a USB 3.0 or USB 2.0 extender so you can move the disc drive around a bit more as the length of the cable supplied with the disc drive isn't super long.

Have only used a few times so far but it seems to be good quality and easy to use. Four stars because, as others said, it does seem flimsy since it’s very light. Just hope it does the job and lasts, that’s what matters.

I bought this for my gaming PC because it did not come with a disc drive. This was a great price, and def something worth purchasing. I have ended up using it with my laptop as well, because it's compact and easy to take with you or move. I recommend!

Easy to use and good replacement for older laptop with DVD/CD-RW that is having a harder time reading discs whether it's new or few scratches, you can always hear it seeking data and takes a long time for it to finally work. Once i installed the new LG 8x External USB 2.0, Windows recognized it and I installed the DVD game disc and it installed flawlessly, no more constant seek time. Bought two more for my other older laptops I use for local gaming.

I used the External DVD Drive to set up my printer because my printer came with a CD driver and my new laptop had none. I was able to get it set up although it was a little hard to do. It may have been the fault of the printer, not the external drive
