Can I attach this to a Surface 2 to play DVDs? null

I use it on my surface pro 4 and have no issues. I believe you should have the same experience with your surface pro 2

We use it on both Surface 3 & 4. Not sure about Surface 2.

I purchased the device to install software that is still only on a CD, but I was able to play a movie as well.

I would think so. I used it with a Samsung TabPro (Windows), which is comparable to the Surface Pro.

If you have a good DVD player software installed you can. It is kind of hit or miss weather it will read the disc though. I would probably go with a little bit better product.

The LG - Ultra Slim 8x Max. DVD Write Speed External USB DVD±RW/CD-RW Drive, Model # SP80NB60 interfaces via a USB 2.0 port and is also compatible with USB 3.0. USB ports have to be able to supply enough power to the drive, it derives it's power through the ports. You will need to either consult your owner's manual for the USB port specifications on the Surface 2 to ensure that it can provide the required power to the drive or contact the manufacturer to inquire about that...^IFV
