“Answering phone calls with a swipe up is very difficult and non intuitive for advanced seniors. Is there a way to Tap a button to pick up a call? She gets frustrated and has stopped trying to answer the phone.”

Unfortunately no. We tried several different ways of answering his phone. The only way is swiping up. My husband says it is kind of like pushing your domino in place during a game of dominoes. LOL I hoped this helped.
