Hub and iPhone will work just fine. No need to have the physical remote. You can always add one later if you like.

I just bought the hub and have it in a closet and I used the remote app on my phone to connect everything. Than linked the skill in my echo and now i just use voice activation.

Yes. That's what I did. The Hub is significantly less expensive (Best Buy for $77.99) and you have the choice of using your phone (or Amazon Echo or Google Home).

Yes. It works great. All updates are on the computer and synced to the hub by your phone. Works great!

You could but I will say from experience this product works better with a remote. As a HUGE WIN I picked up the add on remote for $29.99 at BestBuy.com, its simple but does everything.
