It is a port replicator for a surface. You plug your surface to it, and then can connect things like monitors, keyboards, and other devices to it. Gigabit Ethernet port Provides a speedy wired connection to your home network. 4 USB 3.0 ports Allow you to plug in a variety of accessories and peripherals. 3.5mm audio line out and 2 Mini DisplayPort inputs Expand the entertainment capabilities of your device.

It connects laptop to monitor, with lots of other connections. However it is a terrible product, and Microsoft is terrible for support. My Dock crashes the Surface Pro repeatedly at inopportune times. Never happens to Surface Pro when not plugged in. Buy any other product.

just like any docking station, it adds ports for running external monitors, and multiple USB ports. Bigger power supply included to run these peripherals. Worth the money if you use it as a desktop (which I do).
