Customers are saying

Customers are enthusiastic about the Surface Dock's ease of use, abundant USB ports, and ability to support multiple monitors. Many appreciate its compact size and compatibility with Surface devices, while also finding the improved connectivity and charging capabilities beneficial. However, some customers find the price to be high and the weight a bit cumbersome. A shorter-than-ideal cable length was also a recurring point of feedback.

This dock allows you to connect to multiple peripherals. You can connect a much larger monitor , a printer, powerful speakers, a hard drive or a flash, a mouse of course, a keyboard and the occasional CD installation programs. All with ONE connection only, to the battery charger port. This prevents wear to the tablet ports, and makes connecting all these a simple one step. You can connect 2 monitors, and you can lock the dock using a laptop cord lock, as shown in the pic.

I bought this to hook my surface to two independent monitors. It is PERFECT! It is small so doesn't take up any room. I also charge my phone in it and the usb for my wireless mouse. It is AWESOME!!!!

I've read various reviews about this working half the time. At first when I connected 2 monitors, half the time only one of them would work and then I'd go through the whole restart thing to try and get them to work. Eventually I found that in the display settings that one of the monitors was just turned "off" instead of extended or mirrored. I don't know what made it default to this setting after the initial set up but after that things are going smoothly. The ports are super useful and I do wish there was maybe one or two more extra usb ports in there. Long story short, if you're a surface user like me and prefer a desktop type of experience, this is a definite recommendation

I purchased the microsoft surface dock to connect my surface to use when home on bigger monitors and it works great! I purchased two monitors to use side by side to be able to have multiple windows open. It has worked great so far because the dock charges and connects my surface without a problem. You will need to buy specific HDMI cables that connect to the dock and to the monitors separately. Great buy!

The Surface Dock is wonderfully designed and gives you two additional mini display ports, 4 USB 3.0 ports, a gigabit ethernet port, and a security lock. At $199.00 it is a bit overpriced, but everything Surface comes at a premium price. Surface accessories do work well and complement each other and to Microsoft's credit are backwards compatible with the Surface Pro 3 as well. The Surface Dock has also been reported to be a solution to the issue of the battery draining during heavy use despite the Surface being plugged into the wall. The Surface Dock takes up very little space, but packs a big punch and goes a long way to converting the Surface into a desktop/laptop replacement.

    Essential for desktop arrangement

I'm not a tech guy, so this review is only about my feelings about the functionality of the device. If you want to set your Surface up in a desktop arrangement, this is a must-have item. It gives you 4 usb ports, an audio output jack for your speakers, 2 video ports for your monitor(s) (you'll need an adapter); and it does all of that completely behind the scenes. There's also an Ethernet port if you don't want to connect via WiFi. The only connection to the Surface is a cable that connects in the same place as the charger that comes with the Surface. Note: even with the Surface connected to the dock, the integrated usb port on the computer remains functional for a total of 5 ports to connect and/or charge other devices.. Physically it's fairly small and unobtrusive, but heavy enough to stay in place wherever you put it. The power cord is long enough for any reasonable desk arrangement -- I keep the entire unit on a shelf under the desk and only the connector cable is visible. Expensive, but I'm happy with it. Like most things that work perfectly out of the box, the price doesn't hurt as much as it would if it was ineffective or inefficient.

The dock includes a full compliment of ports for using your Surface product at your desktop. I’ve used one for months for my Surface Pro at the office and I’ve installed one for my wife’s Surface Book 2 at home. Setting it up is *mostly* simple. Plug stuff into the ports. Plug it in. Plug the connector into the Surface. Let Windows recognize all the components and install the drivers. When it works, it’s great. Unfortunately, there is one caveat. You may have trouble getting everything recognized; especially older monitors. You will not find an easy answer, but after a bit of searching you will find yourself directed to Microsoft support downloads to get the updated for the firmware. Fortunately, the update process is much easier to do than it was in finding out that you need to do it. That is why I took off a star. This product has been out a while, so there should not be a need to update this after so long. However, once this was done, it has operated flawlessly. Pop it off, fold the kickstand, and go. Plug it in and it is driving two additional monitors, a mechanical keyboard, external hard drive, printer, DVD, flash drives, and audio pass through. Now there is a general rule that I need to tell you about. Before docking or undocking, it is best if you close open applications. Microsoft office application are typical offenders and perhap the worst is Microsoft Outlook. If you dock or undock with Outlook running, it’s almost a certain lockup. Chrome seems to be the most friendly to docking/undocking while open. Ironic, isn’t it? Thing is, this is NOT a problem of the docking station. This is a problem with Windows and the Office applications. It has existed years longer than the Surface has existed and I have been warning people to do this regardless of laptop make since the early days of Windows XP. I don’t know why this hasn’t been corrected, but I’ve been dealing with it for 15 years. At least Surface is fast enough that thIs is a minor inconvenience. It was horrid on a slow Celeron back in 2005. If you update the firmware and pay attention to the open apps, it should perform will for you.

It's a little on the expensive side. However, it beats having a separate USB3 dock and power. All it takes is one cable connecting to the power port. The block versus a slide in dock should make it useable in future models unless they change the charging port. Microsoft can change the size, shape, and form but keep the same dock. Hopefully, they will stick to a compatible charging port. The connecting cable could stand being a little longer for my particular use, but otherwise it's not bad. It has all the ports I need.

I recently bought a Surface Book 2 and needed to connect my 4K monitor. As I use my computer at work and home I needed a way to quickly disconnect and also two power supplies so I didn't have to keep unplugging one. This is a brick of a thing but as it doesn't move that's pretty helpful, it comes with its own power supply and drives my 4K monitor like a charm, in fact I think it is better than the previous driver I had. The great thing is that the whole thing connects with on simple magnetic connector, its like the stole the Mac idea and made it much better. I use he RJ45 Ethernet connector as well which takes over automatically from the wireless as soon as dock the surface book. It only comes in black. The cables are nice and flexible.

Hey it's a docking station. It supports dual monitors (mini display port) and has the other standard ports. Works as advertised. Small. Expensive but best buy has deals on it all the time ( I got one for free last time I purchased a surface book pro)

Purchased this dock for my Surface Pro 4 to connect to a hard drive, external bluray drive and 4K monitor. The dock is easy to use and works as it should and I've had no issues with it since purchasing it. Note on 4k to those who are interested.. 4K is supported on select Surface Pro 4 models at 60hz. See the Microsoft Support site for details on that. This dock supports it with no problem but your Surface must also be capable. It's convenient because it charges the surface while docked and expands the available ports so that your surface can essentially replace a desktop computer. Really like that the connector can be used to dock the surface even you have a case on it (which is a huge plus over the old dock). Overall I highly recommend this accessory!

First off, whew! I was so wary of getting the dock because of all the issues but I'm happy to say its working superbly and has improved by workflow. Really, if you own a Surface Pro 3 or 4 and don't have this yet, then you are missing out on the added expandability. I use this at my office work in the morning and disconnect at the end of the day. By that, I was able to do away with my desk top computer at my office just because of this purchase. Believe it or not, the best thing I love about it is just one magnetic connection that I can click onto the Surface Pro 4, then I will have many things that connected to my Surface Pro 4 in 2 seconds. My setup: Surface Pro 4 connected to: 1- 3 monitors 720, 1080 and 4K via mini HDMI 2- Audio output: now I can connect my Bose Component Speaker System and enjoy all my music. 3- Ethernet directly. 4- Wireless keyboard and mouse. 5- 2 T Hard Drive. 6- Microphone. 7- 2 Extended USB 3.0 and C. 8- Headset. I'm able to connect those without any issues, takes at most 3 seconds to recognize the three external monitors and the other devices. Now able to move my surface around my desk because I write a lot via OneNote, Programming in Visual Studio and do tablet-y things like Photoshop and video editing, while still retaining my desktop workflow. I am quite happy to no longer need to hook up to the devices, the Display Port, and drag my power adapter too, and from now, it is just one magnetic cable that convert my tablet to desktop. Overall I would say it should save me a lot of my time and make my works more professional.

This is an excellent product to make a surface device into a desktop. I had the previous version of the dock and it was more work to clamp the dock around my surface pro 3. With this one the cable magnetizes to the side port of my surface book and my monitor and all peripherals go live. The dock itself is nice a heavy which keeps it on the same position on my desk. Yes it is an expensive but it makes a surface into much more. I replaced my laptop and tablet for one device (my surface book) and now the dock has made it also into a desktop computer (with my 2k 26" monitor).

The docking station charges the the SP3 also. It allow a hard connection to the internet when you don't want to use wifi. With my SP3 i7 256 I had to do an update for the SP3 to recognize it so if you have this configuration make sure you have a wifi connection to start. There are four usb ports to hook up printer, wireless mouse, extra memory, etc. The station is very small also so it is portable unlike the previous station that the SP had to sit in.
