“Got it set up and worked on my tv outside after initial set up. Now it says unable to join when I try to connect even next to the device.”

Not sure why but have you tried (on the TV) to forget the wifi connection you are using and set it up again. I only mention this because of people changing wifi passwords. Worth a try either way.
