I think it's because of this: the specifications say it can handle up to 680 mbps, but it is "approved" for plans up to 300 mbps. I think that's why the rep recommended the faster Motorola. It may be that the Netgear unit will get you 400 mbps, but sounds like the cable company wants you to have a faster unit to make sure you get the 400 mpbs.
