You do not have to purchase an app and/or service. The app is free and the base service is free and, depending on your needs, may be all you ever need. There are subscription services that allow for some more control (bedtimes, daily limits on access, etc.). As parents of tweens/teens, we have been Circle fans long before we bought the router. We did purchase a Circle device and had access to the premium features, but now just use the simpler version pre-installed on the router.
