You will have to connect your router to the internet connection in your house in order for it to work. DirecTV does not have an internet connection.

Yes, have to have Internet. You need internet service, modem and then this router to give a wifi signal. Or for use of direct tv, you can also connect Ethernet cable from direct tv to router instead of on wifi signal.
