“I'm looking for something to use near our security dvr - so that I can connect an ethernet cable from the dvr to the extender (our router is at the other end of the house), would this work if I plugged it in near the dvr and connected the ethernet?”

Yes this will work perfectly fine for that. I was acutally using one of these to run my computer off of for a while.
