“Pardon my ignorance, completely new to photography - I bought the D3300 it came with the "AF-S NIKKOR 18-55mm 1:3.5-5.6 GII" lens, but to me it's kind of hard to get good picture of my babies. How does this one compares? Worth to buy?”

100% worth the buy. The 18-55mm is not going to give you that up close portrait shot that you are looking for. You have to take into account the sensor on the DX series along with the 35mm lens will be more like a 50/55mm. You can't go wrong with this lens.
