The AF-S NIKKOR 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR lens is an excellent lens for shooting sports. Since you state you are shooting at night, and the fastest aperture you will be able to achieve throughout the zoom range of the lens is 5.6, it would be highly advisable that you increase the cameras ISO setting to increase your shutter speed - if your intent is to freeze action.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Overall, it should. The lens will not be the issue in this case, but the camera might. I will require a higher ISO for the environment you are talking about and the quality of the pictures will be determined by how well the D3300 handles higher ISO pictures. Test it to make sure before you buy the lens. Overall, this is a great lens, the question actually depends upon how well the D3300 handles low light environments.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. It should do fine, although for great quality photos at night, I would recommend a faster lens and going down on the sidelines. For that you will need to spend closer to $10k, but for under $1500 this is as good as it gets.
