I use this and my treadmill and my previous elliptical all direct on carpet with no issues. Depends how much you love that piece of carpet - over time as you do maintenance you may get oil or grease on it. In terms of stability and comfort, carpet works just fine for me. It's also a really great elliptical - super happy with mine so far.
