“If I use an optic cable to hook up this CD player to my receiver, will it play back through all the speakers of my 5.1 surround system? Or does it require an HDMI hookup to the receiver (like PS3, DVD player, TV, etc.)?”

I have my cd player hooked up to an optical cable and it players fine with all 9 speakers.
