• needs to be connected to an amplified unit (receiver or amp). Your Sony was connected to one I'm sure.

• I don't see why not, as you probably have only 2 wires from your sony going to your amp.

• You can only connect to an Amplifier/Receiver. There is no amplifier inside this unit. Your existing Amplifier should be the connection point for your speakers. This is also a changer like your Sony and I'll bet the Sony doesn't have an amplifier inside of it either, if it is labeled as a changer.
