You can use a passive subwoofer but the passive subwoofer will need it's own amp. The chain would look like this: - RCA Subwoofer out from Onkyo to RCA in on amplifier - Speaker wire from Amplifier to passive subwoofer It's also worth noting there are virtually NO A/V Receivers that have amplification for the sub channel. This is a good thing as it offloads the biggest power requirement to a different amp and takes the burden off the receiver.
