You can use a passive subwoofer but the passive subwoofer will need it's own amp.

The chain would look like this:

- RCA Subwoofer out from Onkyo to RCA in on amplifier 
- Speaker wire from Amplifier to passive subwoofer

It's also worth noting there are virtually NO A/V Receivers that have amplification for the sub channel. This is a good thing as it offloads the biggest power requirement to a different amp and takes the burden off the receiver.

No - this was a huge inconvenience & now I'm considering buying an amplifier plate & building an active sub from my passive subs.

I have not tried, but, as long as it is at least powered, it should work. The receiver has all the settings to amplify the sub.
