I researched several receivers prior to selecting this one. I needed one that has enough wattage but provided a quality experience. I wasn't disappointed. For the price it is a great deal. It provides plenty of power to our ceiling speakers.

I have a nice set of speakers hooked up to this receiver and it powers them really well. The sound is phenomenal. Run to the TV with an optical cable. No complaints here!

Purchased receiver for $160 and it sounds F'n great. Easy set up and connections. The sound is incredible while watching YouTube, Netflix, Spotify, and the like. I am rockin out and shakin the walls. Final results will depend on choice of speakers and location. Fantastic unit for the price. I use DCM center, Velodyne sub-woofer Cerwin-Vega fronts, and Sony for the rears. Love It!

Needed a new unit for my home theater. This unit has plenty of power at an attractive price. It may lack the bells and whistles of more expensive units but works great in my application. Definitely would recommend.

I bought this one to replace my old Onkyo 7.1 channel receiver which entertained us for over 15 years. I needed a receiver which supports 4K HDR content and this one fitted my budget. I’ve connected Klipsch Reference Theatre Pack 5.1 to the receiver and the sound quality is amazing. I would definitely recommend this product Onkyo is a very reliable brand.

Great basic unit. I was looking for something That supported ARC/CEC to replace my older Onkyo unit. This thing is awesome. I’m now not the only one who understands how to turn on everything because it’s all automated now.

Good little receiver. It wasn’t exactly what I wanted as far as function goes, but that’s because I’m way out of step with today’s technology. It is great for the installation I’m running it in., primarily for a smart TV and Blue Ray player. I am concerned about the harmonic distortion figure at full power, but since I run highly efficient speakers and a powered subwoofer I’ll never need to press it that hard. I wish it had a phono input, though.

My disapproval of this reciever is partly based on my local best buy and the reciever.
Local best buy review
I purchased this receiver as an open box in excellent condition that stated operates as intended and no missing accessories. I opened the box and removed the reciever to find out the remote and manual was missing form from the box. The microphone that was included with the receiver for speaker calibration did not work. I used my older bose microphone instead to conclude the onkyo microphone was not functional for the onkyo reciever. Fron what i read this is a common issue with onkyo microphones. I'm very disappointed that my purchase was not in the condition I had expected and will only order new in box from now on.
Onkyo reciever review
First impressions this reciver is huge for only a 5.1 surround setup. The initial setup and speaker calibration is very out dated and the onkyo manual (download from website) has little to no details on specifics and troubleshooting the setup process. I was forced to hunt down forums to get solutions for my problems. The display for the reciever is an eye sore as it always displays the volume level (see picture). The back of the reciever has a great layout for how you should connect your front center and surround speakers. The receiever is rated for a 5.1 setup however it is dolby atmos capable which is confusing because dolby atmos generally requires the 5.1 setup AND 2 additional atmos speakers(7.1). I configed my Xbox one with the dolby atmos setting for the Xbox and reciever. The outcome was the same sound coming from all 5 speakers and no surround sound. I switched to a dolby digital setup which proved a better sound quality as intended.
Overall this reciever is a huge confusion as to what the intended setup its designed for. Its very bulky and heavy and is not very user friendly.
I will be returning this product and most likely purchase a denon or Sony receiver which both have better reviews and functionality.

Onkyo As a Company

Before I discuss this model, I want to talk about Onkyo.
Nearly a decade ago I bought a Onkyo Receiver for a home theater setup. Being an early adopter, this early unit developed a problem where it would loose its program settings under certain situations. You have to remember that this was early on in programable A/V models where you could assign sources to any HDMI/Optical/Analog jacks to your heart's content. Onkyo support was awesome. My case was immediately upgraded to an engineer, who rewrote some code for the new model, and send me a firmware update that fixed the issue forever. Well nearly a decade anyway.
A couple of days a go while setting it up to run audio from a new TV, I was having difficulty routing the audio to the optical IN jack. It looked like the TV and Receiver could see each other, so I bit the bullet to call Onkyo Support regarding a 9 year out of warranty product. I got a live support person within 2 minutes, and within 1 more minute I had the answer to the issue: an internal chip no longer available from Texas Instruments had failed, so there was unfortunately nothing to be done for it.
So, it was time to shop for a new receiver (I do love electronic toys!), so I started looking for the early Black Friday deals for Sony, Yamaha, etc.. But then, it hit me... how many companies would have an English speaking tech support person take time to a help debug a 9 year old device? I immediately found an Onkyo receiver on sale at Best Buy. Ordered it for curbside pickup, and 3 hours later I was enjoying a small home theater setup complete with Apple TV/Blu-Ray connected to a late model Samsung TV with very limited hookup options. (HDMI In/Optical Out/Ethernet/USB In)
I will add that this is a mid line model that will work great for living room setups where you have good speakers, and don't want to go the sound bar option.
It felt good supporting people who stand by their products. That said, I highly recommend Onkyo, and hope you will consider them for your next receiver purchase.

To be fair, I'll begin by saying that I found the Onkyo to be the best spec'd and biggest bang for the buck compared to others in its price range. I performs very well as a video sound centric product. Setup was easy, and its automated channel balance setup works better then expect. Sound decoder presets seem to work well. The lack of easy / precise adjustments annoys me, but a good match for my ears / room was found.
As a replacement for low to mid range audio gear from a few years back, it falls way short in terms of actual perceptible power headroom / dynamic range for its rated wattage and lacks the transparency and clarity of old discrete class AB amplifiers in my 80's consumer grade gear with a similar power rating.
So, I'm sticking to my 80's gear for pure audio listening. For video, cinema and low sample rate streams it works well. I suspect that's what it was really designed to do.
