“Can I use this with my cheap old speakers until I can upgrade later? I know they wont sound optimal, but will they work at all , and sound better than they do with my current receiver?”

I used my old speakers my previous receiver died, sounds good. Only problem I had is that my old subwoofer had speaker wire and the Onkyo has rca type plug in jacks so I went on YouTube and they showed me how to make a cord for that connection
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.so long as they are greater than 4ohms. Best if 4 or 6ohm as that is what the receiver is built to support. Currently using 8ohm speakers from my old Onkyo receiver myself. Just have to turn it up a little more than I would with speakers that have more appropriate resistance.
